Masala Chai Tea Recipe: An Indian Household Classic

Chai tea, also known as masala chai, is a popular beverage in India that's made by brewing black tea with a blend of spices like cinnamon, cloves, ginger, and green cardamom pods. The use of green cardamom pods in chai tea dates back to ancient times, where it was believed to have medicinal properties and was used to treat various ailments. Ingredients:

  • 4 cups of water
  • 4 black tea bags
  • 4 green cardamom pods, crushed
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 4 cloves
  • 1-inch piece of fresh ginger, peeled and sliced
  • 1 cup of milk
  • Honey or sugar, to taste

Instructions:

  1. In a large saucepan, bring the water to a boil.
  2. Add the black tea bags, crushed green cardamom pods, cinnamon stick, cloves, and sliced ginger to the water. Reduce the heat to medium-low and let the spices simmer for 5-10 minutes.
  3. Add the milk to the saucepan and continue to simmer for another 2-3 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  4. Remove the saucepan from heat and strain the tea through a fine-mesh sieve to remove the tea bags and spices.
  5. Serve the chai tea hot, sweetened with honey or sugar to taste.
