Dhana Jeera Powder (Coriander Cumin Powder)
Dhana Jeera Powder (Coriander Cumin Powder)
Dhana jeera (also spelled dhania jeera, dhaniya jeera or dhana jiru) is the everyday base spice of Indian cooking, roasted coriander and cumin, ground together. Ours goes a step further. We add turmeric and bay leaves to the grind, so one spoonful does the work of three jars.
The whole coriander and cumin seeds are slow-roasted until the oils come forward, then grind them fresh with turmeric and bay. Warm, earthy, faintly citrusy, with a gentle golden colour. Nothing sharp, no chilli at all. Sourced from India, packed in Brisbane.

How to Use Dhana Jeera Powder
Start with ½–1 teaspoon per cup of curry sauce. For a tadka, bloom it in hot oil for 30 seconds until fragrant. For dry vegetable dishes, ¼ teaspoon per serve, added near the end. Best used for dal, vegetable curries (sabzi, aloo gobi), marinades, roast vegetables, rice dishes, soups and stews.
Have questions?
What is dhana jeera powder?
Dhana" is coriander and "jeera" is cumin in Hindi and Gujarati, so dhana jeera simply means coriander cumin powder. You'll also see it written as dhania jeera, dhaniya jeera or dhana jiru, all the same spice.
What is the dhana jeera ratio?
Traditionally 2 parts coriander to 1 part cumin. Ours is built on that base, then finished with turmeric and bay leaves for a rounder, more complete blend.
Is this the same as plain coriander cumin powder?
Close, but not identical. Most dhana jeera is just coriander and cumin. Ours also has turmeric and bay leaves in the grind, which is how many Gujarati households make it at home.
Can I use it instead of separate coriander and cumin powder?
Yes. If a recipe asks for 2 tsp coriander powder and 1 tsp cumin powder, use 3 tsp of dhana jeera, then halve any turmeric the recipe calls for, since ours already has some in.
Is it spicy?
No. There's no chilli in it at all. It's warm and earthy rather than hot.
How should I store it?
Airtight, away from heat and light. Use within about six months for the best flavour, ground spices fade faster than whole ones.
