What is tandoori chicken spice mix?

Tandoori chicken spice mix is a blend of spices traditionally used to make the popular Indian dish tandoori chicken. Our mix contains red chillies, ground nuts, black pepper, fennel seeds, garlic, cumin, coriander, turmeric, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, cardamom, star anise, and salt. This authentic blend helps you create that distinctive smoky tandoori flavour at home.

How do I use this spice mix to make tandoori chicken?

Mix 3 tablespoons of our tandoori spice mix with 1 cup of plain yoghurt, lemon juice, ginger, and garlic to make a marinade for 8 chicken pieces (serves 4). Coat the chicken well, working it into a few shallow cuts in the meat, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes. Longer, up to overnight, gives better flavour and colour. Cook in the oven at 200°C for 30–35 minutes, on the BBQ over medium heat for 20–25 minutes, or in the air fryer at 180°C for 15–20 minutes, until cooked through.

Is this tandoori spice mix very hot?

It has a moderate heat from the red chillies, balanced out by the other aromatic spices in the blend. If you're not sure how much heat you like, start with a smaller amount and add more next time, or use extra yoghurt in the marinade to mellow it out.

Can I use this spice mix for dishes other than chicken?

Yes, our tandoori spice mix works well with many proteins and vegetables. Try it with paneer (Indian cheese), lamb, fish, prawns, or mixed vegetables for delicious tandoori-style dishes. The mix can also be used as a dry rub for grilled meats or sprinkled over roasted potatoes.

How long does the tandoori spice mix stay fresh?

When stored in an airtight container away from heat, moisture, and direct sunlight, our tandoori chicken spice mix stays fresh for up to 12 months. For best results, always use a dry spoon when handling the spice mix to avoid introducing moisture.
